How To Get Healthy & Shiny Hair in the Winter

If there is one thing about winter that I am not a fan of, it’s how dry everything gets. From the air to my skin, it seems like everything is just screaming for some moisture. Since being out in Denver, I have noticed what a difference the dry mountain air has made to my hair. Thankfully in just a few short months I’ve discovered the best of the best products and created a hair care routine that leaves my hair smooth, healthy and shiny even in the depths of winter!

Want to know my winter hair care secrets? Keep scrolling to see my favorite and must-have products to use.

SHAMPOO & CONDITIONER

I first heard about Kristin Ess because she does Lauren Conrad’s hair and I’m 10000% team LC over here! [anyone else watch The Hills religiously back in the day??] So when she came out with her line of hair care products at Target I knew I had to give them a try. I’ve been using the Signature Shampoo for quite some time now and absolutely love it. So much so that I added the Signature Conditioner into my routine soon after and I’m hooked.

These products are free of sulfates and they have the faintest clean smell to them. They are each $10 and last quite a long time [I typically only wash my hair 1-2 times a week]. In the winter time, I up using conditioner to each time I wash my hair instead of just once or twice a month. I find this helps lock in all of the moisture and keeps my hair looking healthy and full of life!

DEEP CONDITIONING HAIR MASK

Since being in the cold mountain air of Denver, I have noticed my hair being a little bit more dry and brittle than before. With this, I’ve added in using Briogeo’s Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Hair Mask twice a month and it has made a huge difference! It’s very simple to use and only takes 10 minutes. When in the shower, just apply the hair mask from root to tip and let it sit for 10 minutes before rinsing. I feel like I’ve left the salon after I use this, my hair is so shiny and healthy looking!

They also have a Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-Exfoliating Shampoo that I’m looking to add into my monthly hair care routine. Since I use dry shampoo nearly every single day, I think this will be great to help detoxify my scalp and remove an excess build up. This product is also great for hydrating the scalp to prevent dryness and improve the overall health of the hair follicle. Pretty impressive!

DRY CONDITIONER

I had never heard of dry conditioner and was a bit skeptical at first when I saw it on the shelf at Target, but this Style Reviving Dry Conditioner from Kristin Ess is an amazing product! Not only does it instantly add smoothness and shine back to your hair that hasn’t been washed in days, but it is oil and odor absorbing and acts as a heat and UV protection - it’s like 3 products in 1! I find it lasts quite a long time too, which is a win-win. This is priced at $14 and worth every penny!

HAIR SERUM

If I’m noticing my hair is extra dry or brittle between conditioning treatments or just in general from the glorious dry mountain air, this Franklin & Whitman Hair Serum is perfect for adding a boost of shine to my hair. A little goes a long way so I typically will use just 1-2 pumps and only apply to the ends of my hair. It comes in a variety of scents so not only do they add shine and oil back to your hair, but they make your hair smell freshly washed!

COLLAGEN PEPTIDES

I’ve been using Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides for years now and I truly have seen such a difference in the strength of my hair [and nails, too!]. I typically add a scoop to my decaf coffee in the morning but also love using it in smoothies, pancakes, protein bites and beyond. I have fine hair but A LOT of it and I’ve noticed how much stronger and fuller my hair is when I take collagen peptides on a regular basis. There are so many other wonderful health benefits to taking them, like a boost of protein, so I highly recommend adding these into your daily routine!

DRY SHAMPOO

If you haven’t hopped on the dry shampoo train yet, you are seriously missing out! Yes, it takes a little bit of time to oil train your hair to get it to last longer between washes but once you get there, dry shampoo will forever be your BFF. If you’ve been following me for a while, you know my love for Franklin & Whitman - especially their dry shampoo. I love that its not an aerosol and is powder based, coming in a shade for dark hair and light hair. The scents are amazing but my favorite is the grapefruit one [don’t worry, it’s not too overpowering!] It’s just under $20 and lasts such a long time; a little goes a long way!
