How To: Style a Throw Blanket

If there is one thing I have too many of but can’t get enough of, it is throw blankets. The obsession is real! No matter the season or temperature, you can always find me cuddled up on the couch with a cozy throw blanket. They are one of my favorite ways to bring cozy into your home, especially during the fall + winter [more on that here]. But what about styling them? We all see those Pinterest-worthy images where the blanket looks so effortlessly tossed but styled to perfection. How do they do it?!

Thanks to my plethora of throw blankets, I’ve found 5 chic and effortless ways to style a throw blanket. They each have a [cheesy] catchy name to them that associates with their style. Keep scrolling to see the styles!

THE POLISHED LOOK: Folded over the arm of the couch or a chair | this first method is one of the most simple and universal ways to style a throw: folded over the arm of the couch or a chair. I typically like to fold the blanket in half, then in half again. You can then fold the blanket either in half or just the top third and place over the arm of the couch/chair. I like to tuck in the end of the blanket in between the arm and the seat cushion to give it a fully polished look.

THE WATERFALL: Folded vertically on the couch or a chair | another super simple way to throw a throw that starts out the same as the way above [fold in half, then again]. You then lay the blanket vertically on the couch/chair so that part of the blanket is draping over the back and then it cascades down over the front, almost like a waterfall. Adding pillows on top of the vertically “thrown” blanket helps to complete the look and allows you to add extra depth, texture and dimension.

ON THE HORIZON: Folded at the end of a chaise or bed | keeping with the folded theme, you can fold your throw blanket in half or like the two options above and lay horizontally at the end of a chaise or bed. Make sure the blanket is centered so it hangs evenly on both sides of the couch/bed. This way also makes it very easy to grab the blanket and cozy up!

THE CAREFREE TOSS: Thrown effortless over the back of the couch or a chair | the look of a throw blanket effortlessly tossed on the couch with pillows layered is one of my favorite looks! It is the perfect combination of carefree and stylish. My tip to get the perfect tossed look is to fold your blanket in half evenly, or you can roughly fold in half - doesn’t have to be perfect. Then hold one end of the blanket with one hand, hold around the middle of the folded blanket with the other hand and toss the top half of the blanket towards you. Then - just toss! The blanket effortlessly falls as it may with some structure from folding it. You can then alter the folds in the blanket as you see fit. I also like to make sure any fringe at the bottom of the blanket is showing in a “messy” way. You can do this vertically on the couch, over the arm or over the back - this style looks good in all variations!

THE NAP TIME: Tossed at the end of a bed or chaise | another way to do the tossed look is at the end of a chaise or bed. I like this look on a bed best because it adds an extra layer of cozy to a bedroom, almost like you just woke up from a nap. Again, you’ll roughly fold the blanket in half to start. Grab one end with one hand, grab the middle of the folded blanket with the other and toss the top portion back towards you. Then - toss away! Alter any folds in the blanket to your preference to add the ultimate cozy, nap time look.

Now there are tons and tons of other ways to use throw blankets but those are just a few of my go-to’s. I’m also listing below the blankets featured in this post so you can grab them for your space, too! Do you have a favorite place to get throw blankets or a favorite way to style a throw blanket?
